After he won an employee recognition award for elevating groundwater awareness in his community, we caught up with geologist Darrell Reed.
At SEH, we recognize employees through our Act of Excellence program. In it, employees can be nominated for excellence in one of three categories: Accomplishment, Character and Innovation. Darrell won an Act of Excellence award for Character for improving groundwater awareness in his community, Chippewa Falls, Wisconsin, through the Groundwater Guardian program.
1. When a child asks you what you do for a living, what do you tell them?
I tell them I'm a geologist, then follow up with a question to them on what does a geologist does. I study rocks and groundwater and tell them "geo" means "earth" and "ologist" means "person who studies."
2. What one fact about water do you think everyone should know?
That over 2,200 children under the age of five die each day from diarrheal diseases caused by using unsafe drinking water.

The people I work with, and knowing that what I do makes a difference in making our lives better.
